PROGRAM NOTES
In January 2025, I had recently completed Cosmic Menagerie, a 20-minute suite for two bass clarinets that takes rich advantage of the magic sonority produced by bass clarinets playing perfect 5ths in the low register. And for 4 days in January I was happily in Arizona taking in the International Clarinet Association's "Low Clarinet Fest" with hundreds of us sharing our enthusiasm and playing in a massed ensemble of low clarinets, where this phenomenon of odd partials over low fundamentals, and being part of the sonority, was exhilarating.

In the midst of many arrangements and originals for the ensemble, I started thinking someone should arrange the opening of the Janáček Sinfonietta for low clarinet ensemble - it's already a wonderful piece, thoroughly based on low open fifths.

Before the festival was over, I told this to Stefanie Gardner, host of the Low Clarinet Fest, and visionary of Team Lo-Blow, pledging to send her my arrangement within a month or two. Please listen to their premiere linked above! You might also know this music as the source for Emerson, Lake & Palmer's song "Knife Edge."

Once the low ensemble arrangement was completed, making a version for standard clarinet ensemble was primarily changing the instrument assignments on the existing score and parts.
