PROGRAM NOTES
Ever since hearing the album "Songs of the Humpback Whale" in 1970, I've been fascinated by that sound environment from natural reverberations of whales singing (and yelling) under the sea.

Ever since learning about evolution in elementary school, I've realized we are all cousins, not only people, but all living things springing from a distant, but common family tree.

During the 2020 quarantine, some musicians learned new ways to play chamber music by themselves, and I became curious to perform and compose this way using effects devices, typically guitarists' pedals, often referred to as efx.

These unrelated stories fused together in 2025 when Marie Bennett invited me to compose for her series of flute commissions, calling attention to marine ecology and the protection of endangered oceanic species. I immediately thought of the magically reverberating whale songs from 1970, and I asked Marie if could write for Alto and/or Bass Flute, using Reverb and Delay (Echo) effects to conjure the mood, creating an instrumental monodrama or theatrical scene.

The music has the dedication: for Marie Bennett and our extended families under the sea.
