PROGRAM NOTES A lot was different in 1976. LP's were the standard, and they were holy grail, only produced by major corporations, rarely with underwriting from arts philanthropies. Even with no performance major offered, the Cornell University Wind Ensemble was on the map and in the Schwann Catalog, which was "the" monthly guide to what was available on records. That is all thanks to conductor Marice Stith whose musical talents included splicing open-reel tape down to the sixteenth note, then pressing and distributing records. Being on a CUWE record was a dream that many Cornell composers enjoyed, and I had the thrill of being the first undergraduate (and youngest living composer in the Schwann catalog) with a piece composed in my Junior year. As a select wind ensemble in a school without performance majors, it's no surprise that there were a dozen solid performers, some taking lessons on their own across town at Ithaca College, and many non-majors who were glad to be part of the ensemble between their studies in other fields. Knowing the ensemble I was writing for, I opted to write a concerto grosso featuring 12 strong players with prominent parts, backed by the full ensemble. Given my collegiate studies of Baroque orchestral literature and of P.D.Q. Bach titles, writing a Concertino Molto Grosso was the perfect approach. |
